Long time in the making for this one. I started this in April and kept coming back to it on and off for the last two months. My goal was a very hefty one. I wanted to create a Supergirl drawing that felt similar in style to these great artists:

and the late
I don’t think I came close to their work, but I really did appreciate the challenge. The first part of this was to mimic the great Warren Louw’s Mystic Piece:
The pose and proportions are very similar. Warren does a great job with shading and I don’t think I will ever match, but to merge the styles I wanted to merge, I looked to Stanley Lou’s work. Stanley’s style is a bit more sharp. With a novice’s ability to critique art, I think I would say that you can see more of the brush strokes with Stanley’s work. I used this piece and his skin color palette:
Finally, I turned to the god father of Supergirl, Michael Turner. I love his costume the best, I love his art work, and I love his overall style. He is sorely missed. To that end, I used a style of his costume design and focused the face more on a comic book style than what Warren or Stanley would do.
All in all, I am glad this piece is finished. Constantly seeing it on my computer unfinished was killing me and I’m glad I finally wrapped it up. I have been doing a lot of Supergirl drawings lately because I think that is my go-to subject matter when I want to experiment with artistic style. If you find yourself with time, I would really appreciate your comments on this. I want to grow as an artist, and while I appreciate seeing my pieces go into people’s favorites and collections, comments are much more useful to my growth. Thank you all very much!
